The Name
The Origin of “Linux From Scratch”
The term “Linux From Scratch” (LFS) refers to an educational and software project that allows users to build their own Linux operating system entirely from scratch. This idea was conceived by Gerard Beekmans in the late 1990s. Beekmans realized that many pre-built Linux distributions did not offer the flexibility or in-depth learning he was seeking. So, he decided to create a method for building a Linux system step by step, which not only resulted in a customized operating system but also provided a valuable lesson on the internal workings of Linux. LFS became a detailed guide explaining how to compile and assemble all the components of a Linux operating system, allowing users full control over their environment.
The Origin of the Term “Geek”
The word “geek” has evolved significantly over the years. Originally, in the 19th century, “geek” was used to describe an eccentric person or a circus performer who did grotesque acts. However, in the modern era, especially from the 1980s and 1990s, the term has taken on a completely different and more positive connotation. Today, “geek” is used to describe people passionate about technology, computing, science fiction, video games, and other intellectual or technical subjects. A geek not only has deep knowledge in their area of interest but also feels a strong passion for learning and sharing their knowledge with others.
Enter “Geek From Scratch”
Inspired by the concept behind “Linux From Scratch” and my own identity as a geek, I decided to create a personal website called “Geek From Scratch.” My goal with this project is to provide a personal space where I can document my learning, building, and improvement in various areas of technology and other disciplines that I am passionate about.
On “Geek From Scratch,” I believe that true understanding and mastery come from breaking things down to their most basic components and rebuilding them from the ground up. Whether I am developing software, building hardware, understanding networks, or exploring any other technical discipline, this site will serve as my digital journal where I record my experiences, challenges, and achievements.
The Slogan: Learn, Build, Improve, and Share
At “Geek From Scratch,” the slogan is simple yet powerful: “Learn, Build, Improve, and Share.” This slogan encapsulates my philosophy and commitment to continuous education and growth. I believe that:
- Learning is the first step for any passionate geek. It is the insatiable desire to understand how things work.
- Building is the practical application of that knowledge, creating something new and personalized.
- Improving is the ongoing process of optimization and refinement, never settling for the minimum.
- Sharing is the culmination of the geek experience, helping others to learn and grow alongside me.
On “Geek From Scratch,” I will not only acquire new skills but also share my discoveries and improvements. Explore this exciting journey of building from scratch with me!
